Why Cottage Grove

River-town roots, suburban convenience

Cottage Grove sits on the north bank of the Mississippi River in Washington County, just north of where the river meets the St. Croix. It's part of the southeast Twin Cities metro, about 10 miles south of St. Paul. U.S. Highways 10 and 61 and I-494 connect it to both downtowns, and MSP International Airport is about half an hour away.

The city has more land along the Mississippi than any other city in Minnesota. It was platted in 1871 and started out as a farming township known for some of the state's first creameries. 3M has run a production facility here since 1947. Today it's one of the faster-growing cities in the east metro: the population went from 38,839 in the 2020 Census to an estimated 43,604 in 2025.

The numbers fit a family-oriented, owner-occupied community. 88.2% of homes are owner-occupied, the median household income is $120,791, and 40.8% of adults hold a bachelor's degree or higher (Census ACS 2020–2024).
